Improv for Beginners - Sat 1 / Sun 2 June 2019
Discover the joy, freedom and challenge of Improv. Learn to be more creative and more playful. Low-pressure, high-enjoyment classes in a fun, friendly, supportive and stress-free environment.
Complete beginners are welcome. You don’t need any drama, acting, comedy or improv experience whatsoever. You don’t have to be clever, fast or funny either! Also good for writers, actors and comedians looking to widen their skills and boost their confidence.
Improv is not the same as stand-up; you’re not alone on stage and it’s not about telling jokes or being really quick and witty. It’s about working together as a team with other improvisers to spontaneously create group stories, scenes & sketches.
Over a course of an immersion weekend you’ll learn core improvisation skills like Spontaneity, Listening, YesAnd, Character, Scenes, Story and having fun with improvisation.

A chance for experienced improvisers to learn a whole new set of improv formats from a world-class US teacher.
iO Chicago is known as the theatre that originated the Harold, a form emphasising themes, theatricality and group work. But it has also showcased other forms every great improviser should know. JTS Brown, Close Quarters, Living Room, The Bat, Armando, The Google, Detour, and Shotgun.
Learn the moves, openings and transitions from these forms. Make your improv shows look more exciting & interesting than your typical collection of talking head scenes and sweep edits. This fast paced workshop offers plenty of stage time and will help players develop their confidence to make big moves and take risks on stage.
Brian Jack has spent the past 20 years in Chicago and Los Angeles acting, writing, teaching and producing comedy. His tv credits includes Mad Men, Cougar Town, Fair Game. And he’s written for tv shows on networks like NBC, Comedy Central and AudienceNetwork. Brian honed his skills in Chicago at the Improv Olympic, Comedy Sportz, and Second City. He was also a cast member at Boom! Chicago in Amsterdam. Along the way Brian developed a passion for teaching improv to students and professionals from around the world. These days, you can catch Brian teaching and performing at iO Chicago with Deep Schwa, Fat Fingers, and occasionally in Los Angeles with The Reckoning.
